Wii Watcher Plugin Can't Post

I wasn't going to get distracted by this, but couldn't resist when I saw a Wii Controller in the window of a Game Store here in NYC. But the best laid plans...

Anyway: some of you might enjoy the new Wii Watcher plugin for Mac OS X. It will only work in 1.2.5, so you'll need that version to try it out. This code is based on the DarwinRemote by Hiroaki Kimura and the MAX port by Masayuki Akamatsu. The source code for this plugin is also available.

NOTE: NO BUG REPORTS ON THIS PLUGIN! As I said, I've got more important issues on my plate but wanted to see this in action. If it works, great. If not, I'll check into issues later.

For instructions on installing the plugin into Isadora, read the READ ME file.

For instructions on how to use the actor itself, option click the actor to show its help window.

Plugin: http://www.troikatronix.com/...i-watcher-plugin.dmg

Source Code: http://www.troikatronix.com/...i-watcher-source.dmg

Isadora 1.2.5 - Standard Version: http://www.troikatronix.com/...s/isadora125-std.dmg

Isadora 1.2.5 - USB Version: http://www.troikatronix.com/...s/isadora125-usb.dmg

Enjoy,
Mark

P.S. I'm looking for source code to make this work on the PC too... if anyone has notions about where to find it, please email me or post here.

Hey thats great - I've been playing in Max with it, great to see it in Isadora.

The software that gets used by most people on pcs is called GlovePie.

http://carl.kenner.googlepages.com/glovepie

Apparently the bluetooth side of stuff is very different on pcs - on XP it seems to be recommended that you use alternative bluetooth software to the operating system in addition to GlovePie so it may not be to straightforward.

I had a play with this a while ago.
Its pretty straightforward getting GlovePie to work.
You can use widdcomm or Bluesoleil drivers for the wii remote.
Then send OSC or Midi messages to Isadora.

Well, I found that you sometimes need to "connect" and "disconnect" a couple of times to get the LEDs to work. The accel always worked for me though... I think the underlying, open source code, is a by scruffy. Will look at the help info though.

The Max external has similar issues. It is more reliable on MacIntel, but you often have to disconnect and reconnect to get the lights and rumble to work.

I haven't had much time to try the Isadora version, but have found that if it stalls on the Max version its often best to take the batteries out of the Wii remote and reconnect to get it to start again.

Wii to Midi for PC walkthrough [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's a walkthrough I did for wii to midi for the PC. I had bought Izzy for a specific wii application for a specific show (an interactive video golf game) and it worked great. I had to build my own wii actors, mainly to convert midi controller values (x,y, and z, rotation especially) to values that the Isadora video actors could deal with, but all in all I found it to be a fairly responsive and stable platform.
http://ericmedine.com/tutorials/wiitomidi.htm
If you have any suggestions, bugs, or improvements feel free to post and I'll include in the tutorial. Any ideas or comments about using the wii as an interface (has anyone built a control panel for it yet? I have, and it is kinda... unstable) would be much appreciated.

Mark,
1 question about wii watcher, working fine on my MacBookPro:
Do you think it will be possible to receive IR informations in Isadora like in aka.wiimote, I just made 2 boxes with IR leds working perfectly in max/msp, very useful.

It is possible. I will try to get to this... but it won't be immediate.

Best,

Mark,
Thank you for your attention, but I have another problem, when I press a button (+ for example), I have a trigger but also one when I depress the button, Do you know a way to have only one (I want to use integer counter to increase/decrease a number with + and -)
Thank you

Re: [nick] Wii Watcher Plugin [In reply to] Can't Post

hello,
I am trying the module "wii watcher" on isadora 1.2.9 but it doesn't work. DarwiinRemote recognizes wii well and I have tried with other software and wii works well.
It works only for 1.2.5 version?
Thanks a lot

I use Isadora 1.29.
When you put actor Wii watcher, press '1' and '2' to connect, and then togle at actor 'connect' 'on' to 'off' and 'on' again.
When disconnected bluetooth signal, you have to do this again.

Another pretty good alternative is to use Junxion 3 with Isadora (or any MIDI capable program).
http://www.steim.org/steim/junxion_v3.html
I've been using it to navigate QTVR movies inside Isadora. I haven't gotten into the actions yet, but Junxion works great with the Wiimote (but infrared sensors are not working in Junxion yet, verified from Steim). Only drawback is that Junxion is not free, it's about $100.

I don't think position would be possible, this crosses over into motion capture, lots of calibrations, and only one acceleromater wouldn't be able to figure out where it was in space. But if it's possible, would be a nice cheap way for motion capture suits made out of Wiimotes. :)

You can also use the aka.wiimote object in Isadora, who can use positioning with IR bar (I made mine with 6 high power IR led, 3 on each side of the screen). After you can send the position by OSC or midi to Isadora. It works.
For the moment, there is no implementation of this feature on the Isadora wiimote actor (who is in beta state, unstable with button down not working and without IR).

Another way is to use "OSCulator", who receive all the wiimote information, with IR position, and map it to midi ControlChange.

Hope that helps.

wiimote object, assume you meant in Max/MSP. :)
I just bought Max/MSP and have been trudging through the tutorials, still haven't tried linking Max to Isadora yet, but I saw the wiimote object for Max. Boy oh boy, learning Max is quite a steeper climb than learning Isadora, but I can't wait to get them talking to each other.

I'll have an update to the Wii Actor soon. It is now based on the WiiRemote Framework, and seems to do a slightly better job at connecting than in the past.

Best Wishes,

Wii watcher update?
Hi Mark
Is there a new actor for the Wii coming up? I am also on 1.2.9 Core version and cannot get it to connect. (Tiger MacPro laptop.) However, testing it with OSCulator software as an intermediate software works fine. It also allows me to access the Nunchuk data if that is attached to the Wii.
Using it that way, I get the data into Isadora via MIDI control watchers.

I'll try to look at this in the upcoming week. I'm really focused right now on other issues, but I did make an update for myself at one point as I was having trouble with connections too.

Anyway, if you don't here from me by Thursday Feb 7, send an email to me directly to remind me.

Best,
Mark
