I've though about the script actor before, I'm into PERL, but almost not one else is. At any rate PERL or python would allow you to build your own serial out. (as would embedding PD which is a scripting language for th most part.)
I'm not sure how complex a script actor would be:
you would have to author it in such a way that inputs triggered functions via some mechanism.
one output would be straightforward with a return value, but multiple outputs would be tricky.
Though it's more overhead, you can achieve similar results using and OSC, though string IO would be nice for that too.
