DV Codec behaviour Can't Post

Hello all,
I recently had a wired behavior in Isadora.
From within FCP 6 I exported a QT movie with the PAL DV codec. The footage was deinterlaced.

In the QT player the footage looks great and clean, no artifacts. As soon as I import it into Isadora and play it back I get artifacts as if the footage was interlaced. Especially the text looks fuzzy.

I have tried the animated jpeg codec and that results in great picture quality in both QT and Isadora. But file-size is too big.

I have done exports previously on a Windows based system with the same settings (Apple PAL-DV, deinterlaced) and the footage looks great in QT and Isadora.

Anyone has any ideas what to do or where to look for the problem?
Many thanks in advance,
/Harald

If you want to send me personally a clip that isn't too huge (1 or 2 seconds) I can take a look.

Best,
Mark

Hello Mark,

thanks for your feedback. I was not at work for a few days and since I'm back I did a few more test renders. Unfortunately I still get the same "effect" - and only in Isadora.

After reading many postings in the FCP Forums I believe there is a serious issue with interlacing and Final Cut Pro since version 6. I find it strange though that QT looks ok and Isadora does not. From what I understood it uses the same display engine.

However, here are two images I captured.

Many thanks for your thoughts,

/Harald

PS: If you prefer a clip I can send one, too.

It looks from the photo like you're showing a much lower resolution in Isadora. Are you combining two video streams through a video mixer or key actor? This would also account for the fuzzy text.

Check the user preferences in Isadora to make sure they select the largest resolution when combining video streams.

dont forget to check the high quality switch. could be part of this problem

you can force it in isadora at the top right of your media window, or in QT player under window/show movie properties/select the video track/visual settings/high quality.

Dear Harald,

If you point the cursor at the wire leading to the Projector, what is the resolution that is reported in the thumbnail?

Best,
Mark

Hello Mark,

it reads 1024x576 (which is the native size of my video). The mp4 files looks fine in QT and Izzy. It is only the Mac Final Cut Pro generated DV mov file that looks "bad". It must be the file... I only asked here because there was no response in the Apple FCP forum.

Many thanks,

/Harald

So this isn't an Isadora problem, yes? I just want to know if I have to check into anything in Isadora.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello Mark,

honestly I'm not sure.

There is a difference in image quality between Isadora playing the clip and the stand alone QT player playing the very same clip. Now, I don't know if Isadora should deal with the clip differently than it does, all I can say and see is that it does not look the same.

Maybe the stand alone QT player does some sort of "interpretation" which makes the video look fine... Maybe if I export the clip differently also Isadora will display it looking fine.I have tried to export the clip in many different ways... but still got the same look. I'll try and create some more footage to find some sort of system to what is happening.

As I already mentioned same clip in MP4 format looks fine and the same in Izzy and the QT player. So it is not a general playback issue, that's for sure.

Many thanks for getting back to me anyway,
/Harald
