Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards Can't Post

Hello Users,

Now that I'm back in the States, I want to make an effort to start developing a "reference" platform for playing multiple channels of video to multiple projectors -- a specific hardware configuration (computer, cards, disk drives, memory config, etc.) that can be guaranteed to give a certain level of performance.

I myself have never used the multiscreen output feature in a major performance with Troika Ranch, so I actually don't have this information.

This topic is however timely because I'm making an arrangement with a vendor of Macintosh systems to get access to some top of the line machines on which I can do some testing. Of course, I want to create such a specification for Windows as well, and if I need to rent the hardware to come up with a spec, I will do so, as this "baseline" system info has been long needed.

But, I want to start with advice from my users who have implemted such systems. We could start with the following:

1) Tower Configurations - CPU, RAM, Disk Drive
2) Video Cards -- brand, model, RAM, etc.

What has worked for you in the past? What pitfalls should we avoid? How many channels can you play and get full frame rates?

Any information to fill in the blanks would be much appreciated.

I look forward to your responses.

Best Wishes,
Mark

Re: [Mark Coniglio] Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome back Mark.

I'm actually working on such a configuration.
5 Projectors and one display for control.
I haven't test the complete installation yet but the hardware will be the next.
MacPro
2x3ghz quad core intel xeon
8Go Ram
2x500GB harddisk (mirror raid)
2xNVIDIA GeoForce 7300 GT
1x NVIDIA QuadroFX4500

So far it's working really well. But if with this configuration it doesn't, I don't know what to do.

I will tell you when I've test the complete installation.

he,
i'm actually working with 4x GeForce 7300GT,
no problem here, work like a charm.

That thing said,
i've got a Quadro but when i try to "mix-up" cards i get some conflicts.
i think it's a better way to choose same cards, equal performance...

let me know what's about your config.
thx

(sorry to interject this here, but where else?)

What are you frame rates with multiple videos playing back in simple configurations up to more complex configurations? What is the limit on this 5 projector machine?

Re: [boys&murderers] Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

ok, apologize:

I dindn't try multiple output with isadroa, i'va try with modul8 (from garage cube). I get 25 fps (i'm french), with up to 8 video layer (512x384 each, photo-jpeg, 75%).

I also try HD movies (in photo-jpeg) and i can read two 1920x1080 and one 1280x720 at the same time without any glitch.

My config:
Mac pro 2x2,66, 5Go ram, 500GO raid0, 4x7300GT (got also 1 quadro...)

Gonna test isadora on this machine during the juillet's last week.

Re: [dachicourt] Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

hmm, im trialing with some success
1x2.66 quad core
3xvVidia 7300gt
1xblackmagic hdmi capture card
1xmotu firewire sound interface
2x7200rpmraid hd
7gb ram
..for 4 projectors and a control screen
works ok on ci projectors for sd at 25fps but cant get those ci and au actors to converse with standard actors in 1.2.8..is this the story with core?
im also looking into an upscaler for the projectors
cheer

Hi

There are actors called video-to-image and vice versa which makes them talk to each other. Mark C mentioned that there is a cpu hit when doing so however.

Hello Ryan,

Do you have latency problems when capturing video? I'm looking for a good configuration (video card and computer) that causes as little latency as possible.

Thx,

Ief.

Re: [trukske] Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

HI there Truske,
I wonder if you mean lag in relation to the real time processing speed of the capture card. I use a decklink blackmagic card within an 8core tower where the lag is barely noticeable if existent. But when effects or multiple screens are used, espescially when using large files like SD. But latency as in long cables from a camera? This I think is negligible. From what I can tell, its all about processing power, and capture cards reduce strain on video cards. some are better than others. maybe search for other users capture cad experience within th forum. hope this is of some use.

Re: [ZED] Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

I am installing a 4 projector experimental space in Matlock UK. I am intending to use the following spec

MAC PRO 8 CORE 3.2GHZ 8GB ram 320GB 3x Nvidia GEFORCE 8800GT 512MB

The team have limited/no Isadora experience, but it seems like the best solution for this multiprojector set-up. Any advice on the set-up of this system EXTREMELY WELCOME. I am looking to find someone to come and od some training - so ifs theres anyone out there who is not far from Derbyshire UK please let me know

I have started a separate post in the user announcements - please follow there under subject :

"Looking for a Izzy Trainer in Derbyshire UK - Sept/Oct 08"

Re: [Mark Coniglio] Desktop Machines + Multiple Video Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

FWIW, I now have a Mac Pro (Dual Quad-Core [8 processor], 2.8Ghz) with two ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards installed, giving a total of four outputs.

For a dance film I'm making with Troika Ranch, I also have some 1080p HD content that I'll be using to do some tests. So I will report more here soon on performance.

Best,
Mark
