IP webcam Can't Post

in the theater I'm working, one of the next creation will have 8 live input camera for 3 projector (with different picture on each projector, of course). It's surveillance camera so not of very good quality. In the security world, they have some desk that can handle this kind of configuration(cut transition, nothing else), but they are expensive and not very user friendly.
I know that, using quartz, I can have multiple video input in firewire or usb (just make one quartz file for each camera and playing them like movies in isadora) but it suffer loss of quality on each camera you add.
And here comes the next idea. Has anyone use an IP webcam with isadora or quartz. By IP webcam i mean a webcam that can han an IP adress and is plug with rj45 cable. I've never used one of those and I don't really know how they work.

So the question is, does anyone know how to have a live input out of one of those using quartz or isadora. Or has anyone a brilliant idea to handle 8 live input ?

for an example of an IP webcam or other cool stuff, go here

Hello ZED

Yes it is possible to use IP Webcams, we are using 4 canon vc-c4 communication cameras and an AXIS Videoserver, with 4 inputs. So I can have 4 live cameras at the same time. The only thing is that you get a delay of 3 - 5 seconds.

You can read my other thread about the AXIS videoserver here:
http://forum.troikatronix.com/..._Video_Server_P1529/

Mark is getting into it to see if there is a way to reduce the delay.

Re: [michel] IP webcam [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the quick answer.

I'm actually waiting for an axis camera to make a bunch of test before I can sell this solution to the theater. As I was in a hurry (they decide this week how we do this), I didn't take time to really look at all the manufacturer for this kind of product. But one thing appear to me. Most of the IP webcam use the ActiveX plugin. And as it is a microsoft only thing, it's not really compatible with quick time.
In the meantime I found the vivotek stuff ("http://vivotek.com"), they're kind of cheaper than the others, they also make video server, and, mainly, they use a linux server for the streaming and ensure it's fully compatible with quick time and linux Mplayer.

Further news about this, when I got my camera.

Re: [ZED] IP webcam [In reply to] Can't Post

So, I finally receive my axis IP webcam.
And strange things happenned. Like you, I can't open the motionjpeg in quicktime and I have a five second delay with the mp4 (in the browser and in quick time).
The strange things are : I can't open the quicktime file in quartz composer or get the images directly from the cam. I wanted to do this just to know how it reacte in quartz. So not really a problem but strange nonetheless.
The weirdest thing is : when i play the quicktime file in izzy, I have no delay. Don't ask me why or how, it just miraculously happens. I will continue my tests to know if it stays like that or if it is just a on lucky shot.

Are you playing the generated quicktime file with the normal "Movie Player" and "Projector" or with the "CI Movie Player", "CI Projektor"?

Re: [ZED] IP webcam [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, I checked the AXIS Video Server with different setups.

Power Mac 10.4.11 and 10.5.2, Isadora and Isadora Core
Intel Mac 10.4.11 and 10.5.2, Isadora and Isadora Core

I can't see any changes, still a delay of 5 seconds in Isadora.

But I found out something new, you can detect and connect to the AXIS Video Server in Safari with Bonjour. But if I connect computer and AXIS directly with a network cable it takes ages to load the page, connecting both over a hub the pages load fast.

So do you have any new experiences with you setup?

Re: [michel] IP webcam [In reply to] Can't Post

Unfortunnaly I won't be able to do further test with the IP webcam for now. They decided to do the project with security cctv cam all analog. Now as they continue with the rehearsal they begin to think the IP webcam was a better solution, but too late...

Another question, that has nothing to do with the subject. In which theater are you working in Zurich. Because we're coming with the Heiner Goebbels Stifter Dinge for some date in end june. I thought it will be fun if we meet there…

I just checked via Google, you will be at the "Theaterhaus Gessnerallee" with "Stifters Dinge". I work just on the other side of the road at the "Theater der Künste". So it couldn't be easier to meet. Would be great.
