Net Broadcaster and Listener Problems Can't Post

Hi there,

I am trying to get two windows computers running Isadora, each with the 97b version, connected with a router to send values back and forth using the Net Broadcaster and Listener actors.

However the listener's don't seem to be able to 'hear' the messages being sent over the network.

I followed the instructions in the manual and see the lights on the router blink when I hook a wave generator up to the value input of the Net Broadcaster actor. However no listener actors react to the changing values. Even when the listener actor is located on the same computer and patch as the Net Broadcaster it fails to hear the messages.

On a lark, I plugged in my macbook to the network and the listener actor on my mac version of Isadora picked up the messages. However when I tried to broadcast from the macbook XP machines still failed to hear anything.

The XP machines find each other fine when I ping them from each other.

The two XP machines have been set with Static IP addresses, would this be causing this problem?

Any other ideas?

Kind regards,

Alex O

Hello,
Maybe you can try to desactivate XP's firewall.
You can also maybe try OSC.
Have fun!

Thanks for the note Mehdi!

We did check the fire wall and they were seemingly turned off.

When working with OSC on a windows machine, does it require an intermediary like OSCulator on the Mac?

Kind regards,

Alex O.

No you shouldn't need OSCulator but you could do with a OSC monitor to see what the other slave machine is receiving.

Frieder Weiss' is a good little free app for Windows. Wink

Have you altered the default '1234' port number on the slave machine by any chance?

Thanks for the pointer to this OSC monitor Skulpture!

The '1234' port number has remained unchanged. . .

I'll see if we can't get OSC working on the machines. . . but it would be nice to be able to figure out what is going on with the Listener actor . . .

Thanks again!

Hi,
Have you got anything like a router or firewall on your network?
If sending from isadora to isadora on two computers, you don't need any third party software.
OSC send and OSC receive actors should do the job easily.
I hardly use it on networks with PCs and Macs mixed. I never had any problem...
Maybe you can send me screenshots of your patches. I can have a look if you want.
I personnaly encourage you to use OSC more than netbroadcasters. I feel it more powerfull, and it's also supported by a lot of softwares.
I just finished a project with 7 computers ( 6 Pcs & 1 Mac ) networked, I used OSC to comunicate between them, and it worked perfectly.
Have fun!

For the Net Broadcaster to work, you need a router (not a simple "switch"; routers generate IP addresses using DHCP for example) that supports Multicasting. Most routers do this out of the box in my experience, but some may have this feature disabled. I have found when making a direct connection (e.g., Mac to Mac) that it _doesn't_ work. If you cannot insert a router, then you'll need to switch to some kind of fixed IP addressing and OSC.

Best Wishes,
Mark

So what your saying is you need a router, or if you can't add or use a router, use a direct (one to one) LAN cable and create a fixed IP address from master to slave?

No, I guess I wasn't clear.

Multicasting requires a router. Point to point connections just won't do the trick. (And to be really clear, the Net Broadcaster requires multicasting.)

Mark

P.S. For more on multicasting, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast
