Revert to QuickTime 7.1.6 from 7.2 Can't Post

MacFixit has a procedure for reverting to QuickTime 7.1.6 from 7.2 half down this page http://www.macfixit.com/...ry=20070719091155572

I have used it on a MacBook Pro 2.33GHz and I now have sound again with Isadora 1.2.8. The procedure is listed below in case the link does not work for you. I have not seen any problems yet but they certainly could appear so backup up if you have IMPORTANT files before trying this.

Bruce

Force installation of QuickTime 7.1.6
Another workaround that has proved effective for some users (especially those who never had the pre-release Java system installed) is to force installation of QuickTime 7.1.6 using the tool Pacifist, then re-install the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater via these steps.
  1. Download QuickTime 7.1.6 but do not attempt to install
  2. Download and launch Pacifist
  3. In Pacifist, click the "Open Package" button, then locate and open the QuickTime 7.1.6 .pkg file.
  4. Click the lock and enter your administrator password, then click the "Install" button.]
  5. Download and install the Mac OS X 10.4.10 combo updater.

Re: [bruce] Revert to QuickTime 7.1.6 from 7.2 [In reply to] Can't Post

Cheers Bruce,

Many thanks for posting this detail, it worked for me on my 2Ghz Intel Macbook, and restored Isadora audio for .mov files (strangely mp3 audio worked with Quicktime 7.2), and it also restored the record stage process which had been goosed by QT 7.2.

They're a big couple of downloads (except Pacifist which is small and perfectly formed) but in the right order, and after a double restart, all is well so far; QT 7.16 is 43.6Mb and the OSX 10.4 combo update is a whopping 297.2 Mb.

One thing I had to guess at; during the install of 7.16 through Pacifist it asked whether to replace or update existing files, and I chose replace, which seems to work.

Now I'm turning off auto check for updates and I'll await recommendations from this list, especially when Quicktime is tweaked.

Should I run the combo update in safe mode..by holding the shift key on startup?

I did not run the 10.4.10 combo update in safe mode but as my admin user. MacFixIt does recommend safe mode for updates as it is certainly a more basic system with fewer background apps running. Also, you are correct I used "Replace" in Pacifist as well. I think it is is safer to use that option instead of "Update."

Did Isadora crash after you downgraded to 7.1.6?

I'm running Isadora on a Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz dual core. After I followed the steps above, everything installed fine except the 10.4.10 update (my computer already had 10.4.10 on it when I bought it a couple weeks ago).

I was hoping to use audio to automate parameters for a show I have in early October, but may just have to resort to using a sampler/sequencer to just trigger midi and let the sequencer sync with the BPM of the music. I was hoping I could use audio to synthesize graphics for the show.

Anyone else using the same notebook as me with Isadora 1.2.8?
Any solution to this quicktime downgrade dilemma?

UPDATE:
I ended up reinstalling my OS off the disks it came with. I'm sol with using QT 7.1.6. The computer came with 7.2 installed, and downgrading the computer messed things up a bit (anything using Core Audio or QT generally crashed after the downgrade and even after reinstalling 7.2.x from apple's site. Screwiness, like my clock disappearing, itunes crashing, etc was the result of trying to downgrade my computer. If anyone else has a brand new Mac that came with QT 7.2. installed, I wouldn't "downgrade" it may not work and screw things up. I ended up wiping out the drive, and reinstalling everything. There goes one of my installations for isadora....

Re: [bruce] ISSUES with Revert to QuickTime 7.1.6 from 7.2 [In reply to] Can't Post

One final note on this, in case anyone else continues to try this solution --

Had issues with the 5 step process listed above by Bruce on a new Intel Machine -

After step 4, the computer began to malfunction (no menu bar, spotlight flashng, apps quitting on open) ran the combo update twice before the system restored to normal. But it did return to normal after a second install. However, it wouldn't install 7.1.6, but instead restored 7.2.

Avoid taking any of the above listed steps and use the new work-around Mark has posted.
