What's the best way to create 3DS objects? Can't Post

Hi All

I've searched around and asked around and I'm still confused about what I need to produce basically simple 3DS models of spheres and geo-solids of various types for use in Isadora 1.2.8. I can buy Maya 8 at an academic discount but the website doesn't say if it outputs 3DS files. Any advice?

Thanks, John

I used a program called Carrara 3D Basics. It does the job, is easy to use, and costs $99.

Also comes with 1000s of models.

Best,
Mark

FWIW

I followed Mark's suggestion and looked up Carrara's Basics... had some concerns about it's MacIntel capabilities so I went to the Daz3D web forum and found out that Carrara 5.1 (UB) is available for a short time for $88 USD, about what Basics costs. Carrara 6 is about to be launched and the current 5.1 comes with a free upgrade to 6. Tip: if you try to buy you'll see that the $88 price is for "platinum club" only, but go ahead and buy it for $124 then during check out there is a 30% welcome to Daz coupon = $88. Haven't figured out how to actually _make_ anything yet with the program suitable for Izzy but maybe soon!

Aside: how does one "attach" a skin to a model in order to have Izz be able to place a clip on the surface?

You have to attach a texture map to the object. When you export as a 3DS model, it will also export a JPG texture map. Once you do this you can then use the 3D Player actor to map video onto this texture map. Note that Isadora will only map to the first texture map -- if there are multiple maps attached.

Best,
Mark
