Axis Video Server (delay 7-9 frames) Can't Post

Hello

I had an idea to get more than 1 livecam on a computer. A video server (Axis 241QA) it costs around $ 850.-. You can get 4 analog live streams simultaneously through a network. You don't have to install any software, the server setup and controlling the 4 cameras are easy made through any common web browser. With this video server you can choose between motion jpeg or mpeg-4. The motion jpeg works with a delay of about 4-5 frames, the mpeg-4 has a delay of 3 - 5 seconds.

Here my experiences and a few questions.

The url format of the motion jpeg is "http://", so it is not possible to open this stream in Quicktime.
Or is there any way to convert it and get it into Quicktime?

The mpeg-4 url format is "rtsp://", so I can open it in Quicktime, save every stream (4) as a reference movie and open them in isadora. But I have 3 - 5 seconds delay.

Now I found out something very odd. I downloaded a little software called StreamLogger (http://versiontracker.com/...oreinfo/macosx/22231). When starting up, it first checks your Quicktime version. I open the same rtsp:// address and the delay was the same like in Quicktime.
In StreamLogger you can activate or deactivate "CapSure" when activated, thumbnails get captured faster. OK. Clicking on activate and there is a delay of maximum 5-7 frames, deactivate it still around 5-7 frames. Pause and restart the stream and there are 3-5 seconds delay again.

So the main delay doesn't come from the video server , it must be some buffer delay or so. Is there any possibility to reduce that?

update
StreamLogger is built with Macromedia director MX, it is possibly a bug that after changing the mode, the buffer size is set to zero. Would it be possible to implement a "change buffer size" function in Isadora?

Thank you for your help in advance
Michel

Re: [michel] Axis Video Server [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello All

Here are my experiences so far to the Axis video-server.

First of all, the optimum I got was a delay of 7 - 9 frames in Isadora with four mpeg4 rtsp streams simultaneously.
Limitations on hardware: I just managed to get down to that low delay on Intel Mac's NOT on G5's or lower (true for Isadora).

So when I talk about Mac's I talk about IntelMacs from now on.

Attention: There is no solution to say, do it like this and it works on every IntelMac.

First case:
MacBookPro 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo
- IMG file from school (10.5.1) with lots of programs on it :) --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.2 --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.3 (combo upd.) --> works
- update to Quicktime 7.5 --> works
- update to 10.5.4 (combo upd.) --> works

Second case:
MacBookPro 2.16 GHz Core Duo
- Clean Installation of 10.5.1 --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.2 --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.3 (combo upd.) --> doesn't work
- update to Quicktime 7.5 --> works
- update to 10.5.4 (combo upd.) --> works

Third case:
Mac Pro Dual 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
- Clean Installation of 10.5.1 --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.2 --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.3 (combo upd.) --> doesn't work
- update to Quicktime 7.5 --> doesn't work
- update to 10.5.4 (combo upd.) --> doesn't work

--> Making a clone of the system from one of the MacBook Pro's with CarbonCopyClone to the Mac Pro --> works

So it has definitely to something with the software installation, but still depending on the hardware.

Next to the software I mentioned in the post above (StreamLogger) I found another software called "SecuritySpy" (http://www.bensoftware.com/ss/overview/index.html) that always works with a delay lower the 10 frames even on a G5 and no matter if you have 10.3 or 10.5. So there must be a way for it to work all the time in Isadora no matter what setup.

I hope Mark finds some solution, maybe asking one of the software developers of the apps mentioned above can give a hint.
