Camcorders: Firewire, Disk and Tape

I'm not sure whether this is really a "hardware platform" question, but: what are people's feelings on the current crop of camcorders? It looks as if tape is on the way out (yay) and disk is on the way in, but this seems to mean that (i) the codecs are not yet as good, and (ii) the camcorders generally don't have Firewire, making them less than useful for live video processing, and (ii) the non-realtime-transfer camcorders like the JVC Everio series use proprietary formats and don't have any decent Mac support. So: is now a good time to jump to HD-based machines rather than tape? Disk-based units make a lot more sense, but I'm not sure they're quite ready for prime-time...
