Question re Video/Graphics Cards Can't Post

Hi

I am working on a dual 2.7GHz PowerPc G5. I need an extra video card for a show in May. I intended to get the same as is in the computer already (ATI Radeon 9650, chipset Model ATY RV351; 256 Mb) as I want to run the same quite heavily processed patches (no 3D though) on the two cards through two data projectors. I cannot find a card of this spec and just need to know if an ATI 9200 128Mb would do - by 'do' I mean not have a different outcome for the patches from the two data projectors. Am I right in thinking that the main rendering work goes on in Izzy and therefor that the bigger Mb Video cards are not essential.

Not really sure what I am saying here - it reaches beyond my knowledge of my computers! Any help would be useful as I need to get this asap.

Thanks

Sarah

Re: [Sarah Rubidge] Question re Video/Graphics Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

Sarah: I am unsure about this too, but will check with my friends at 3LD. They are running a show with G5s and encountered the same problem as you. Will try to have an answer later today.

Re: [Sarah Rubidge] Question re Video/Graphics Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Sarah,

Here's some info from Jeff at 3LD:

The video card for the dual core G5 pre-intel mac that we found is

Radeon X1900 G5 Mac 256M PCIE

It has to be installed into PCI slot #1 and be powered from the motherboard (it comes with a little cable and simple instructions), which is fine where you have an Nvidia 6600 card installed already that does not require added power, and can be easily moved to another slot. The problem occurs when you already have a card that requires power from the board and also needs to be in slot #1... we ran into this, but had some computers with 6600s, so I ended up swapping a lot of cards around various machines to get it to work...

cheers,
jeff

Re: [Mark Coniglio] Question re Video/Graphics Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Both,

I guess the ATI Radeon (which is in PCI Slot 1) must run from the motherboard .... think I might need to get someone in to help me with this!!!

But thanks for the information it is a great help

Re: [Sarah Rubidge] Question re Video/Graphics Cards [In reply to] Can't Post

Just a note - don't mix manufacturers when you double up your video card.

I've seen numerous setups where there is an NVidia card in the AGP/PCIE slot and an ATI card in the PCI slot and all of ths supposed outputs will not work.

I wish I could explain why this occurs, but I can't. Neither can the people at ATI or NVidia, or at least they won't offer up the information.

So be very careful in your video card selection... Wink
