Quick Question about video cards Can't Post

Excuse my ignorance...... will be purchasing Isadora in the next month or so for theatrical productions.

Quick question about video cards. Previously, I've just been working with a single output device - video projector. All fine and dandy if you video card and machine are fast enough. So one video card and one output....

If I add a second device - projector or display - do I need a second video card?

Will I need an external splitter than can signify which output I'm using?

I'm a mac user (thankfully) running on a iMac (Intel), but might be using other machines for a different production.

Is the MacBook surfice to run two output devices?

I teach theatre design, so my resources are small to non-existent. But working more and more outside productions needing multiple outputs.

I'm excited about the possibilities with Isadora.
Thanks,
Adam

Re: [AdamP] Quick Question about video cards [In reply to] Can't Post

Adam,

I am also a very new user (just purchased yesterday), so take my feedback with a grain of salt!
I'm using Isadora to playback stereo movies (2 movies from one QT file) and using a Macintel box with an extra $149 dollar NVIDIA 7300 card (with dual DVI outputs). I'm getting great playback of 720P HD movies that way. You can use a Macbok Pro as well if you get a $250 Matrox DualHead2Go express card for it. I didn't go that route because it uses VGA in the signal path which seemed wonky. My settings are attached.
I hope this helps. You'll have fun with Isadora, it's a great program.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Adam~

I admit that I am too fairly new to the world of Isadora and am currently trying to better understand how the program handles video. But I do have a experience with video and computers in general (both PC and Mac).

Both your iMac and MacBook should be able to able to handle a second display. But before I can advise you further, what are the specs for each of these systems? The processor and the amount of ram you have will have an effect you playback abilities, as well as the video card and how much ram it has.

I think Adam's response covers it all, but to summarize

To get two independent video outputs from Isadora, you need

1) A desktop computer with multiple video cards, or cards with multiple outputs (as Adam suggested)

or

2) A laptop with a Matrox Dual Head 2 Go. (There is also the Triple Head 2 Go for three images.)

Best Wishes,
Mark
