External Harddrive Usage with Izzy Can't Post

Local or external file storage: which provides better performance in your experience?

Brand, rpm, connection type, and any other relevant information would be greatly appreciated.

This is a very important topic to anyone planning to use Isadora with a laptop or even a desktop, so please chime in with your 2 cents.

I have always used local files, but I have heard that using an external is the way to go, at least with older Powerbook G4's. I'm looking for other Izzy users to corroborate this claim.

This could become Tip #12 in the manual's optimizing for speed section...

definitely use external hard-drives if u'r using video loops.
i got great performance improvement by getting an external fw800 mini-raid from g-tech. fast and small.

with the new mac'intel machines using an express-card > sata adapter is the way to go. 3Gb/s bandwith.

fw400 / fw800 [In reply to] Can't Post

::rux:: -- That sounds like the most optimum mobile setup possible. It's good to know that it does improve performance.

Does anyone have comments on fw400 or fw800 (non-sata) connections improving performance?

Mark - you tour exclusively with laptops, do you keep your files local or use an external hd?

I should report that I've found no noticable jump in performance using a FW800 (7200rpm LaCie) external drive. If nothing else, the fan in the laptop doesn't kick-on quite as soon or as loudy as it does when fishing locally.

Once I have an eSATA rig setup, I'll letcha know how it works.

HD 10000 rpm [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,
everybody speak about CPU and RAM to improve performances but RPMs hard-drive seems to be very important.
I plan to get a 10 000rpm extern hard drive, do you thing it will make a huge difference with a classic 7200rpm ?
And what about an intern SCSI 15 000rpm hard drive ?

Yes, the rpm is very important - but the connection is most important.

The trick is to either use SATA or eSATA. LaCie's pro line of harddrives have eSATA connectors, which can tranport data at up to 3gb per second. The next fastest option is a SATA internal drive, which is what you'd be using on a MacPro or any tower with multiple hd's.

Using an external is not optimal, based on my experience.
