G5's vs. Macbook Pros Can't Post

Hey Everyone,

I'm thinking about getting a Macbook pro to make travel a little less of an ordeal. I'm currently running a dual 1.8 G5 with 1.5 GB of ram on system 10.4. Does anyone have any experience with moving from such a machine to, say, a 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro? Does anyone have any general thoughts about performance differences between two such machines? Also, how much stress can I expect switching from the Power PC machine to an Intel machine? Can I open all of my old Isadora files on an Intel powered Mac? I have a show coming up in early September so I don't want to make the switch now if it's going to be overly complicate. However it would be great not to have to haul around a G5!

By the way, if anyone is going to be in Toronto in early September, I have a piece in the Toronto International Film Festival that is run on Isadora - kind of a user controlled narrative piece. Imagine if Stan Brakhage remade Caddyshack and got Pink Floyd to do the score - it's like that. The dates are the 9th at 7pm and the 13th at 6pm - both dates at the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Thanks a lot for your help guys!

Brian

I've always used a laptop for my shows, so I can't comment on moving from a desktop. Perhaps others have experiences to share.

Best,
Mark

Thanks Mark,

And what about the power pc to intel change. Can I expect to be able to open my old files on an intel machine?

best,
Brian

There should be no issue moving Isadora files from PPC to Intel, or from Mac OS X to Windows and vice-versa.

Mark

The only possible issue really (other than having to upgrade everything to universal binary) is that the new Macs come with quicktime 7.2 installed. I tried to downgrade using the techinque in these forums, it messed up my OS, ended up reinstalling my OS (see my post in general if interested).

So...you may lose audio functionality until this gets resolved.

Re: [brian johnson] G5's vs. Macbook Pros [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

i've been building my isadora patches on a dual 2 ghz power PC G5 and then i use them live off a 2.33 ghz intel core duo macbook pro and i haven't had any problems. i keep the isadora files and all the clips on a removable firewire drive so i just plug the drive into the machine i'm using and fire away... both machines frame rates tend to be around 29-30 fps, but sometimes they slow down according to the effects i'm using (i find that backlight and the different blurs are the ones that slow down the fps the most). the one thing i find is that older patches tend to be clunkier (that is, patches built with older versions of isadora), but if you cut and paste the patch and rebuild it in the new version of isadora performance goes way up.

good luck,

antonio

thanks,
antonio

I've posted a workaround to the QT 7.2 problem today -- see the Announcements topic at the top of the forum for more info.

Best,
Mark
