Good quality and good performance Can't Post

Hi everybody,
For a show i need to show 2 video at the same time on 2 projector. I have a G4 Quicksilver 2x800 Mhz with 1,25 Go of RAM. Each vidéo are in 2 different internal hard disk. Each projector is connect on different graphic card.
The fps counter show that the performance is 5fps. It is a bad performance. So my question is how can I do it better? What is the better video format (codec, size, fps) to have the better quality ? What is the good adjustment in Izzy pref...?
So i need all advice to show 2 video on 2 screen at the same time with the same computer.
Thanks
Crazy

What is the resolution of the video? Full res DV PAL or DV NTSC? Or something bigger? I would imagine you could play two of these on a Dual 800Mhz G4. But I don't have such a system to try, of course.

Do you need to do effects or crossfades? If not, use the Movie Player Direct. It will give the best possible performance (the same as QuickTime Player.)

Best,
Mark

Sorry for my long silence but i was not at home. The 2 video are in PNG, FPS 15 and 320x240. When i look with system monitor, the processors are not full.
I have a second layer on the video. A jpeg black mask. And i create some function to correct the video in realtime (HSL)
The FPS watcher tell me 5 FPS when I play the 2 video in same time and 7,5 FPS when i play just one.

The HSL adjust actor is very CPU heavy; I also don't think PNG is the best format for the video. You might try animation -- this is much less processor intensive (but gives big files) or Photo JPEG. The mask should be very light, CPU wise.

(Take a look at http://www.troikatronix.com/...movie-cpu-usage.html for information on how the various codecs affect CPU usage -- you'll see that in QT Player, PNG used 36% CPU, while Animation used 4%)

Give these suggestions a try and let me know if it improves things.

Hi mark,

i always thought that we wanted our clips to be compressed as photo-jpg but after looking at your cpu usage chart it seems that animation, video or cinepak would be more efficient.

is there any other advantages to using photo-jpg other than -- it seems to me -- looks better than the other three codecs?

also is the difference in cpu usage between photo-jpg and the others (between 4 to 4.5 points) noticeable when it comes to performance?

thanks,
antonio

Well, it really depends on the resolution of the clip. If you're going to do full res (720x480) then DV is probably your best bet. The chart you're referring to was done using only 320x240 clips. I don't think higher res clips will do as well... Anyway, the advantage of PhotoJPEG is that it has a very low CPU usage, and each frame is compressed individually. That way you can play forward and backward with equal efficiency, and playing faster than normal (2x, etc.) is also very efficient. Animation & Video codecs can be faster, but produce really really big files. It's all a trade off... and experimentation is the key for each particular situation.
