MacBook 13" jitter Can't Post

Hi.

1) Shouldn't the 13" MacBook (not PRO) with 2GB of RAM play one stream of 320x240 or even 640x480 Pjpeg or MotionJpeg fluidly? I had a client buy two and it's not? Am I missing anything. Should I get an external HD or is it just the graphics card?
I am pretty new to MAC. Are there any tweaks to assign more resources (I tried with and without preloading (not to RAM though since its OsX) but it doesn't affect performance).

2) Would the G4 12" powerbook be better?

3) Do the MacMinis perform better?

4) Does the MacBook Pro do 640x480 well?

There are no effects applied. Just the MTC Compare actor running to sync the videos to the sound.
Any comments are very welcome. Even the older white ibooks seemed to run 320x fairly well (not considering the anoying glitch).

Keep it up MarK. Good to see the steady evolution.
Best,
Henrik

Hi Henrik,

I don't know why this would happen. I've run full res DV clips on a Mac Book (without effects) and they run fine.

Is this a significant jitter? Or am I just more forgiving than you? My fear is that you're noticing something that I'm not... I mean, I'm not a professional video person. Or is the jitter, like, reall obvious?

Have you tried reducing the sleep interval (or in the new version, increasing the general service task rate)? Does this have any effect?

Have you attempted to adjust the Movie Idle Task rate?

What is the frame rate reported in the Status Window? And the Cycles?

Let me know...

It seems to be allright now. Installed the latest version 1.2.7.

I even managed to get the Firewire out to playback smoothly at although it still oscillates between 23.2 and 25.1 frames (I am talking PAL here).

So everything is set to 720x576 like the QT dv source (Stage Size, Scale To Size and Pal output).
Service Task and Movie Service Task both set to 8x Per Frame (5000 ms). It seemed to make sense to set both to the same or multiples of value. It's just a feeling but it works so far. Have to triple check everything now because the client is not very happy Unsure.

Other settings that also work are Service task 20x per frame (2000ms) // Movie Serv Task 4x Per frame (10000ms) 22.3 to 25.0 FPS.

I get a steady 25FPS with these settings:
Setting everything but the FW output to 360x288 which is a quarter Pal (with and w/o the force HQ flag set)

Anyway, it's not looking bad and I'll try to give more feedback on my findings.
Regards,
Henrik

PD: The new version did not like the preload actors at all (some were still set to load into RAM). So I deleted them all.

Re: [v23] MacBook 13" jitter [In reply to] Can't Post

update:

it's inconsistent - I am getting smooth movement 1 out of three times I trigger the clip
Service task etc do not seem to influence so much.

It feels like if it doesn't hook onto the clip. If it's not smooth from the beginning it doesn't go smooth later. I have to retrigger.
Is it a Mac Os thing or the harddisk?
Should preloading help?

OK -- well try preloading. It might help... but I'll have to take a look at this.

How sever is the jitter -- slight or very noticeable? Is it rhythmic?

Best,
Mark

How noticable it is, depends on the kind of graphics.
There are circles growing from the center and it is very noticable.
You could say it's rythmic but then again it sometimes makes a little bigger "jump".
For real action video it's hardly noticable. Could be interpreted as a film-look / progressive effect.

The question is why it only happens 2 out of 3 times or so. Sometimes it runs fine.

Best regards,
Henrik

Are you willing to send me a short clip of your source material so I can have a look -- maybe 2 or 3 seconds, so the file isn't so large?

Best,
Mark
