Recording To Stage Problems

Here's a transcript of an email exchange I had about using the Record to Stage feature of Isadora:
When I record my creation I never get sound in my rendered movie clips, The other problem I've been having is that my movie stutters once the file has started to be rendered. Should I be recording to an external drive or is this just a bug that you've been working on. I'm using the photo-jpeg compression format at 24 frames a second on a Quad G5 computer. The video never has problems while running live, only when I'm trying to record. Sense the main thing I use isadora for is video graphics I would be in your debt if you could help me resolve these problems. Hi -- thanks for your email. Here's some answers: 1) Isadora has never been able to record the sound while recording the stage. This is not a feature I plan to support. You could however use something like Audio Hijack Pro to record audio as your movie is rendered, and then splice the video and audio together. I know that's not optimum, but at least it is a possibility. 2) Regarding chunky recording: recording video to the hard drive is a CPU intensive process, especially at full resolution (640x480, etc). It requires reading data from the OpenGL buffer used to render the stage, compressing it, and then writing that data to disk. Even on a fast computer, this can be problematic. (For instance, if you try recoring the output of a single 320x240 movie through one effect at a resolution of 320x240, I think you'll find that the chunkiness goes away -- this is because the CPUs and disk drives are not being taxed so heavily. Take a look at the FPS and Cycles in the Status Window before and after you start recording -- I'm sure you'll see the values go down when you start recording by some significant amount. 3) When recording the stage, ensure that it is set to the exact resolution you wish to record. (I.e, use the Default Stage Size setting the the Preferences to adjust the size of the stage, and choose "Force Screen Preview" to use that size.) If you were displaying your video full screen, and rendering at a lower resolution, Isadora would have to scale the video down first. Worse yet, don't record your video while the stage is full screen (e.g. 1024x768) and the, in the Record State Settings dialog, have the size of the stage set to "Stage Size". This would record a 1024x768 image, and I can guarantee that will work poorly. The only other recommendation I can give here is to tell you to experiment with lowering the "render speed" the Record Stage Setup dialog. When you set this value to say, 50%, everything in Isadora that has to do with time (Wave Generators, Movie Playback Speed, Trigger Delays, etc.) slows down by the specified amount. This gives your computer more time to do the work of compressing the image and rendering it to disk. But the resulting movie plays back at normal speed. The only issue with this approach is if you are using live input (Mouse, Keyboard, MIDI, etc.) to control things -- if you do this at "real speed" when your rendering at 50%, your actions will seem twice as fast in the rendered movie. Hopefully that helps a little. Best, Mark - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mark Coniglio / TroikaTronix Creator of Isadora
