DREAM VENUE CONSULT Can't Post

Dear Izzy Users:

I have a dear friend who is in the beginning stages of designing a performance space in Massachusetts (approx. 350 seats). In addition to satisfying traditional theatre needs, they wish to be forward-thinking in their capacity to host more non-traditional, genre-stretching events and performances.

This is where your insights will be most appreciated: I am putting together a "wishlist" of those features you always wished were available in a venue and/or ones that you were lucky enough to actually have in a venue that you were delighted to put to full use. Comments can relate to architecture, technological equipment, sound, visuals, etc. and can be as detailed or large scale in scope.

I thank you in advance for taking a moment to think on this and culling from your wide-reaching individual creative practices.

With the best of wishes,

Carole

Re: [carolekim] DREAM VENUE CONSULT [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello. I am surprised you had no replies to this, but here is a suggestion...
I work with a theatre in Vancouver that invested money in a similar way to attract visual performance artists:

- x4 high quality (640x480 resolution) CCD security camera/s available for artists to hang in the theatre, with Manfrotto brackets for hanging them on pipes. $500 each
- x1 video mixer Edirol V4 (to connect the 4 cameras to) $1100
- x1 Canopus video digitizer unit (converts the the analog camera signal to firewire so that the image can be sent into the computer. $600
- x2 video projector/s (matching untis at least 3500 lumins, but depends on the size of the theatre space). $3500 each
- x1 Lanbox (allows interactive control of the theatre lights) $1000

With this minimum of equipment a new media/isadora artist would be able to create some interactive work in the theatre space, just by bringing along their own computer equipment.

More along the lines of the cameras....I've used the Sony EVI-D70 with great success. There is also a larger version....the BRC-300 which is broadcast quality. These are PTZ with great lensing and are controllable with an RMBR-300 joystick (or software). The Edirol switcher is a fine choice, and others can be had for relatively cheap. The Panasonic MX series comes to mind.

Thanks for responding Jamie! Will pass on the info to the powers that be.

I figure when we're asked for input before a venue is built, best to jump on it!

If we're making wish lists...

Every modern theater should have at least 2 (or more) MacPro Tower computers with 3 video cards and a minimum of 4gb RAM in-house.

The machines should have the full working complement of Adobe Production Suite, Final Cut Pro Studio 2, Isadora, and QLab so as to function as both performance and production workstations.

I would also add that the projectors be accompanied by an array of interchangeable lenses, wide, long etc to facilitate flexible design options.
Check out the tech list at Dance Theater Workshop for an excellent example of lens options.
