What does everyone do? Can't Post

I wanted to post a general thread just asking what people do?

As in.. VJers, multimedia instilation work, intermedia performance, etc etc...

Would be intresting to know what people are involved in. I will start...

Just completed 3 years of creative music technology (CMT) And I am going on to do my Masters in Digital Performance, looking at AV technology. I have also worked for 2 theare groups Precarious (www.p-dance.co.uk) and young and poor productions in London.

An instant without duration....

Re: [skulpture] What does everyone do? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've got an architecture degree but don't use it. Worked in web design for a while. Now I mostly do freelance tech support. I do visuals for shows as a hobby and to not be standing against the wall at friends shows. I just end up watching the visuals at a show anyway, why not be the one putting the imagery up on screen?

Worked on this project with a bunch of people:

I love working on projects like that where I get to work with multiple people towards one insane goal. I love learning, and with a project like this, you have to take on more than what is in your normal comfort zone. I also tend to create weird stuff ostensibly for myself. I'm starting to make "art pieces" that people will be able to interact with more.

You can see some examples on v8media.com. A lot of my projects involve a computer and some form of interesting interaction. The one I'm currently working on is sort of a case mod plus Isadora. It's a 12" PowerBook with no screen in a pay phone case that has a ton of audio samples. Most of the interaction right now is sample-based, but I'm working on a bunch more that are AppleScript-based involving the pay phone having a computer voice and you interacting with the phone similarly to a voicemail system from hell. I'm also playing with Ableton Live to see if I can have a loop-based sampler mode and work that in to the mix.

p.s. - Any programmers want to take on this, I don't have the time or programming skills: http://v8media.com/2006/12/19/ds-idea/
I've got a lot of this thought out and would love to contribute graphics or ideas. I would love to see this happen.

i have been working in the production industry for the last ten years doing everything from rentals to sales and installation,

i currently work for solotech inc, www.solotech.ca we are canada's biggest av company as an installer,
as well as working as the production manager for heaven nightclub www.clubbheaven.ca in ottawa

we use isadora in heaven to feed video to a projector on a 20' translucent video screen and to drive 113 color kinetics mrg2 led fixtures arranged in a grid behind the screen via the lanbox interface,

you can see the install in action here :

I use Isadora to design projections for live performance... dance, opera, orchestra. Primarily a visual artist working with technology therefore, though I do also perform in some of the works I collaborate on.
Have been working with Isadora now since the early Beta version for Mac.
I make films for live performance with orchestra that respond to sound and motion.
I also now have worked with the Lanbox, so am incorporating the lighting grid in the theatres that I work with, into projects as well now, to have an artist 'sing' the lights, or a video 'follow-spot' that is interactively tracking the performer etc.
I find Isadora to be very versatile and fills most of my needs as an artist to get my creative expressions onto the stage and screen.
I have worked with other programs as well, but Isadora seems to beat them all, for the things that I wish to accomplish and for the ease of design.

Curious to know more about your LED screen in Ottawa? Maybe I'll come for a visit sometime? I am located in Vancouver, Canada.

yeah.. basically using the lanbox interface we synch video projected onto a screen with the led's behind and when the club gets wound up the screen comes up for a more dramatic effect!

Re: [ryancarman] What does everyone do? [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for asking this...I"ve been curious myself.

I'm a prof of visual art at a small college in Ohio (Kenyon) and although I started as a printmaker, for the past 15 years I've been doing media installations and some collaborations with composers and dancers for performance using video. I'm new to Isadora, having done only one simple live performance. I'm about to put up a show in a gallery with two separate pieces using Isadora to allow viewers to interact with video/ audio. I am very enthusiastic about the options for Isadora and I've gotten my colleagues in theatre and dance interested (we just bought 10 copies)...so maybe we can teach it as well. However...I'm not nearly as computer saavy as most of you ...(knowing mostly FCP and Photoshop well, and a few other programs) so its still a bit of a struggle to figure things out.

Thanks for all your hints and suggestions on this forum.

Claudia

( ps. I think that colleges like mine would be interested in more tech support/ workshops, etc. Mark, I know you don't have time for all of this...its heroic that you do all of this so far...but I think it would be great if you could get some help (as you have indicated you are planning))

I'm a video technician/stagehand at a professional theater on a college campus. We are primarily a road-house so not a lot of opportunity to create original stuff....but boy do I have to patch some shows! We do Broadway, Dance, Opera, R&R, the gamut. We also do a fiber optic hook for distance learning which I will be re-configuring for iChat soon. Also a lot of smartlights and powerpoint-ish things.
