Summerbranch Space4 14 July – 9 September Summerbranch is an exhibition of intermedia works exploring movement and stillness in nature. By means of camouflage and other disguises the exhibition considers ways in which a person can blend into a ‘natural’ environment. Summerbranch uses the tools of the military-entertainment complex, computer gaming, motion capture and 3D environments to question what is truth and what is artifice in our attempts to reproduce nature. Not only is the role of the real in virtual environments investigated, but also that of the reproduction of nature in the history of art, and particularly landscape work. The work challenges our experience of the real, presenting interactivity as a form of audience engagement, blurring the boundaries between spectator and participant in both active and passive ways. '... it concerns the reappropriation of technology used for more militaristic means: yet despite it's faintly ominous imagery, Summerbranch conveys a sense of tranquility.' - PC Gamer (Jan 2006) Summerbranch is created for three gallery spaces and is composed of three parts: virtual environment, video installation and a set of lenticular and wall prints. Summerbranch will preview at Space4 in Peterborough from 13 July - 9 September 2007 Summerbranch is the result of a 2 month residency undertaken by Ruth Gibson and Bruno Martelli at ArtSway in the New Forest, originally a co-commission between ArtSway, SCAN and Capture4 of Arts Council England.
